Common elements in my negative feelings about writing Oh wow its not often I can go on a moan fest, let it rip, and let it all out. Negative feelings about writing. Doubt – I’m not good enough to do this, I’m not expert enough in the field of academic writing. I had the wrong training in art and design with a bit of academia tacked on the end so I fee unprepared. This critical incident vignette demonstrates the beginning of negativity towards writing. Sitting on the scratchy coconut matting in primary school, in our class we had glass jars of things to count, beads, dog biscuits, ect. Of course, I ate a dog biscuit, it was really dusty and stale. I had decided to be silent that year. In class 4, making me about 7. I had decided that grown-ups were stupid. They asked ridiculous question that I couldn’t answer like “why can’t you tell the time” or “have you got a smile for us love?” “what’s going on in that head of yours?” I decided the best policy was elective mutism. ReViewing BlackMountain College 2024
super excited to be speaking at an art-school in America ever since living in North Carolina in the early 90s I have wanted to be part of the Black Mountain College community, Robert Rauchenberg, Anni Albers, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, all alumni of this Bauhaus inspired arts school. Here is a sneak peek of my paper abstract for this conference in October 2024. This qualitative arts-based research paper is set in a Bauhaus inspired art school in the North of the UK where my parents were lecturers and I also am a lecturer. Yeomans (1987) writes that, key Bauhaus lecturers escaped from Nazi Germany in the 1930s and were welcomed by Black Mountain and UK art schools. My question is, does grounding international arts ...
Creating a Community of Inquiry What is a community of inquiry? Lipman 2003, Biesta 2014 and Dewey 1934 believe it is a conceptual investigation into problematic situations. My problematic situation? The FE Art courses I teach have both practical art and theoretical contextual studies elements, the conflation causes the problem. Students come to art school because they are practically interested in making art and are indisposed and resistant to writing and committing themselves to paper. Why is this? Research hopes to investigate how writing culture is currently viewed. To this end a reflective diary project has been established with 29 participants, in addition participants may also join a book club, interviews and critical incidence will be recorded with the intention of discovering some of the themes and threads, indicating possible issues, hindrances and hang-ups to written success? Does the concern lie in student expectations not being met or learni...
